Jumu’ah, also known as Friday Prayer or Congregational Prayer, is a prayer that Muslims hold every Friday, just after noon instead of the Zuhr prayer. Muslims ordinarily pray five times each day according to the sun’s sky path regardless of time zones. Jumu’ah means Friday in the Arabic language.
Meaning of Word Jumma
Friday is in Arabic JUMMA which literally means congregation. It is a day when GOD has told every believer to pray in congregation. Jumma Mubarak literally means Happy Friday. Muslims offers weekly prayers (Namaz) on Friday noon which is sacred to their religion and considered holy day according to Islamic beliefs.
The Quran invokes the importance of Friday as a sacred day of worship in a chapter called “Al-Jumma,” meaning the day of congregation, which is also the word for Friday in Arabic. It states, “O you who believe! When you are called to congregational (Friday) prayer, hasten to the remembrance of God and leave off trade.
When someone wishes you “Jumma Mubarak”, just reply back with the same sentence “Jumma Mubarak”.
Friday is the sixth day in Islamic week. The literal meaning of Friday is congregation. In Islam, this day is given the most importance than any other days of the week. Every Friday, Prayer of Jumma is offered and for this prayer special time is taken. Imams of all mosques deliver khutbah (speech) on a special topic every Friday.
Importance of Jumma
The Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) described the virtues of Jumma prayer in the following hadith with these words;
”When the Friday comes, at every door of the Masjid there stands Angels who write down (the names of) those who come First, then who comes next. When the Imam sits down, the records are closed and they come to listen to the reminder , i.e. the Khutba….” Muslim 1984.
Also reported by Imam Muslim, Abu-Dawood, Al-Nasai, and Al-Tirmizi, that Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) had said, “The best day during which the sun have risen is Friday. Jumma is the Day when Adam was created. It is the day when Adam entered paradise and also when he was taken out from it. It is also the day on which the Day of Judgment takes place.”
